St George’s Hospital Gets on the ‘FastTrak’ to Electronic Patient Records

St George’s Hospital, a leading private hospital in New Zealand, needed to replace an aging Galen system and meet the government’s mandatory integration with the National Health Index while coping with complex multi‑payer billing and tight IT resources. The challenge was to gain accurate, real‑time visibility of patient care costs and integrate with external pathology, radiology and national systems without expanding the IT team or budget.

InterSystems TrakCare was implemented as a Patient Administration System and hospital‑wide Electronic Patient Record, delivering rapid NHI compliance and “FastTrak” integration in just eight months. Nurses now enter data at point of care, billing and supply usage are tracked more accurately (protecting margins on expensive disposables), and the hospital achieved these gains without increasing IT staff or costs. Planned phase two work will add radiology/pathology integration, medical records tracking and external clinical summaries.
