South West Alliance of Rural Health Achieves Regional Electronic Health Record System for Clinical and Administrative Support Across the Continuum of Care

The South West Alliance of Rural Health (SWARH) in Victoria, Australia partnered with InterSystems to deliver a regional electronic health record across 13 hospitals and 114 sites spanning 60,000 km². Their challenge was to unify clinical and administrative systems across acute, primary and community care, integrate legacy applications and external providers, and improve coordination and efficiency while reducing support overheads.

SWARH implemented a single-instance InterSystems TrakCare solution—starting with a regional patient identifier and an emergency module, then extending to clinical information, patient administration, pathology interfaces, videoconferencing and electronic medication management. The result: instant access to comprehensive records for 200,000 patients, seconds‑fast pathology and risk‑factor retrieval, automated alerts and discharge summaries, an estimated 30% savings on travel costs, pharmacy time to review medication charts halved within four months, and lower support costs with continued rollout into community health.
