South Africa’s largest pathology organization deploys TrakCare Lab to support 4,400 clinics and hospitals in fight against HIV/AIDS

The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is South Africa’s largest public pathology provider, supporting roughly 4,000 clinics and 400 hospitals and providing services for about 38 million uninsured citizens. Facing a 106% increase in demand over four years and urgent needs for faster diagnosis and disease monitoring—especially for HIV/AIDS and drug‑resistant TB in high‑burden provinces like KwaZulu‑Natal—NHLS required a scalable, integrated laboratory information management solution.

NHLS deployed TrakCare Lab using InterSystems Caché as a centralized database and InterSystems Ensemble for seamless integration, completing the first of two rollout phases. The implementation has shortened test turnaround times, enabled faster access to HIV treatment in affected regions, and strengthened nationwide pathology and disease‑monitoring capacity.
