Sonic Healthcare, an IT trail blazer reveals keys to success

Sonic Healthcare is a A$1 billion federation of diagnostic labs and radiology/pathology services with about 10,000 staff across Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the UK. Faced with complex, highly controlled clinical workflows and wide variation in IT cost and performance across acquired businesses, Sonic needed to consolidate systems, cut infrastructure and operating costs, and accelerate application delivery while keeping IT tightly aligned to clinical processes.

Sonic adopted InterSystems CACHÉ across the organisation, centralised development and governance under a small executive committee led by a Chief Systems Officer, and built a web-based Radiology Information System using CACHÉ Server Pages. The result: drastically lower resource requirements (10x less storage, 5x less processing), faster time-to-pilot (one year), planned rollout over two years, improved functionality and significant per-patient cost reductions while maintaining continuous productivity improvements and proprietary control of systems.
