Case Study: Providence Health & Services Washington achieves predictive, strategic business insights with InterSystems Ensemble

A InterSystems Case Study

Preview of the Providence Health & Services Washington Case Study

Providence Health & Services uses Ensemble to extend capabilities of data warehouse to gain strategic business insights

Providence Health & Services, based in Seattle, needed better visibility into clinical, financial, and operational trends across three acute care hospitals and 150 physician locations—more than 400,000 hospital encounter records and 1.5 million clinic encounters annually. With 12 systems and 30 data sources, only a small subset of data was in the format required by its McKesson Horizon Performance Manager data warehouse, limiting decision support and the ability to act proactively.

Working with Birlasoft, Providence implemented InterSystems Ensemble as an architectural integration layer, using Ensemble virtual documents tied to a 1,200-field McKesson XML schema and staging data in Ensemble’s high-performance database. Ensemble’s graphical BPL, transformation and data-quality features shortened development cycles, enabled daily updates, extended McKesson’s data reach, and delivered integrated, reliable clinical, financial and operational insights—improving predictability and management after the February 2006 rollout.
