Partners HealthCare, one of the largest integrated healthcare networks in the U.S. based in Boston, needed to manage extremely complex clinical and administrative data while supporting critical, 24/7 applications for roughly 55,000 users (including more than 5,000 physicians). The IT challenge was to deliver high availability, fast transactional performance, and seamless scalability to handle heavy concurrent loads and large-scale public-health reporting across hospitals and community providers.

Partners built nearly 800 applications on InterSystems Caché and Ensemble to meet those needs — from EMR access for community physicians and a hub for HL7 genetic messaging to a system that sends about 75,000 clinical test results daily to the state and a physician order entry system that cut adverse drug reactions by 17% (saving up to $10M annually). The platform now supports an average of 8,000 concurrent users, handles ~26 billion database accesses per day (peaking above 30 billion), and has scaled reliably to meet the organization’s performance and growth requirements.
