Northwell Health Uses HealthShare to Make Care for High-Risk Patients Less Risky

Northwell Health, a large New York health system with 16 hospitals, roughly 6,000 beds and nearly 400 outpatient practices, needed to improve care coordination for women with high‑risk pregnancies. The challenge was to connect more than 100 providers across multiple inpatient and outpatient EHRs (plus specialty ultrasound systems) where differing data elements and standards made sharing obstetric information slow, manual and incomplete.

Northwell brought the InterSystems HealthShare platform in‑house to standardize terminology, exchange over 150 discrete obstetric data elements and share physician narratives, pushing data and alerts into clinicians’ workflows. The result: automated notifications and real‑time access to aggregated histories eliminated gaps in care, enabled proactive intervention, increased safety and patient satisfaction, and helped achieve better outcomes for mother and child.
