A InterSystems Case Study
North Shore-LIJ Health System, a large integrated network of 16 hospitals, ~6,000 beds and nearly 400 outpatient practices, faced fragmented care coordination for high‑risk obstetric patients. Multiple inpatient and outpatient EHR instances and separate imaging systems used different terminologies and lacked the discrete obstetrics data needed for clinical decision support, making transitions of care manual, slow, and error‑prone.
To solve this, North Shore‑LIJ brought InterSystems HealthShare in‑house as its strategic interoperability platform, connecting more than 100 providers and exchanging over 150 discrete obstetric data elements plus physician narratives across diverse systems. The platform standardized terminology, pushed data into clinicians’ workflows, and automated notifications and alerts (including labor-and-delivery indicators), resulting in faster, safer care, higher patient satisfaction, and the ability to proactively detect and close gaps in care.
