Major Hospital in Prague Relies on InterSystems Technology to Make Applications More Valuable

The Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague is a leading transplantation, cardiology, and research hospital that faced a common healthcare IT problem: clinical information was fragmented across many “satellite” systems that didn’t communicate. IKEM needed a way to present unified patient records and support result‑based searches for clinicians and researchers without rebuilding all existing systems.

IKEM built Zlatokop on InterSystems Caché as a web search portal and then redesigned its Caché Server Pages into flexible, code‑generated objects that could be reused as primary data structures. That approach allowed Zlatokop to both index external systems and host ten internal sub‑systems (e.g., catheter lab, surgery, HR scheduling), integrate PACS via DICOM, and connect further systems using InterSystems Ensemble/HL7. The result was a single web interface for patient records and result‑based queries that improved diagnostics, supported epidemiologic research, streamlined scheduling, and increased the overall value of IKEM’s applications.
