Goodfellow Cambridge, a Cambridge-based mail-order specialist selling metals and hi‑tech materials to more than 80 countries since 1965, needed to migrate its 560‑page paper sales catalogue to the Web to better serve a multi‑lingual, geographically dispersed customer base. An earlier outsourced web solution proved unwieldy and hard to update, so the company sought an in‑house, maintainable platform that could support multiple languages and frequent content changes.
Using InterSystems Caché Web technology, Goodfellow built a multi‑language online catalogue (Spanish, French, German, English and U.S. terminology, with Italian in development) featuring advanced search, product technical data, shopping basket and order submission. Orders are sent as encoded e‑mails into the company’s processing format (credit card or invoice), speeding order handling, enabling web‑order discounts and a competitive edge, and integrating seamlessly with existing Caché‑based stock, sales and accounts systems and improved overseas database access via a private network.
