Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust takes SOA approach to application integration

Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust faced a tangled IT environment of more than 50 point-to-point interfaces and many siloed applications, which made change slow, costly and hard to manage. With limited documentation and the need to support new regulatory and clinical requirements — plus an upcoming patient administration system — the Trust required a simpler, more flexible architecture.

The IT team adopted a service-oriented architecture using InterSystems Ensemble (with partner Integrella) to build a “Healthbus” ESB that now connects over 50 critical applications for around 3,000 users. The project was delivered within budget, sped up delivery of new services, reduced interface costs that previously ranged from £25k–£80k, and is forecast to save at least £100,000 over three years while improving information flow and easing the PAS rollout.
