A InterSystems Case Study
Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute–designated comprehensive center, needed to manage highly complex patient visits, multiple simultaneous appointments, and extensive clinical data while maintaining real‑time visibility across the care team. The challenge was to track virtually every interaction from check‑in to discharge and support scheduling, clinical decision making, and billing without performance bottlenecks or forced archival of patient records.
The center built an oncology clinical information system (OCIS) on InterSystems Caché, using bar‑coded kiosks and a compact multidimensional database to capture point‑of‑care documentation, adjust patient flow in real time, and integrate scheduling, clinical support, and charge capture. The result was smoother visits and greater patient confidence because providers always know a patient’s location and plan, plus the ability to keep all patient data live for retrospective review to help determine optimal treatments.
