Hospital Costa del Sol Rapidly Cures Integration Headaches with Ensemble

Hospital Costa del Sol is a large public hospital in Andalusia, Spain, managed by EPHCS. After multiple integration attempts with other vendors failed due to poor reliability and slow delivery, the hospital adopted InterSystems Ensemble in 2007; a proof-of-concept using HL7 and a Java API to connect Pharmacy and Pathology systems was completed in one week.

Ensemble was deployed as an ESB to integrate 11 major systems (HP, Roche Diagnostics, GE Healthcare, Cardinal Health, and others) via HL7 messaging, ODBC/JDBC, Java, web services and SMS, with staging areas for rapid development and testing. Its high-performance message repository delivered guaranteed message delivery and end-to-end traceability, passed resilience tests with no message loss under simulated failures, and now handles about 13,625 HL7 messages per day at roughly 15 ms each, backed by direct vendor support.
