Hixny Builds Patient Portal with HealthShare Interoperability Platform

Hixny is a regional health information exchange serving the Capital District, northern New York, and the Mohawk Valley that has used InterSystems HealthShare since 2009. Faced with fragmented patient access, high per-hospital portal costs, Meaningful Use Stage 2 interface requirements, and the technical and identity-verification challenges of aggregating records across many EHRs, Hixny set out to provide a single, community-wide patient portal that would reduce patient and caregiver burden and encourage provider participation.

Hixny built the Hixny For You portal on HealthShare Personal Community, rolling it out initially to recently discharged patients to establish identity-verification processes and planning partnerships with a credit union and pharmacy for future verification. The community-wide, bidirectional solution now spans 564 connected entities (31 hospitals, 2,121 physicians) and 2.6 million patients, delivers about 88,000 lab/rad/transcribed reports per month, and sends roughly 20,000 patient-event notifications into EHRs monthly (a tenfold increase), improving care coordination, access, and participation while avoiding costly per-hospital portal builds.
