A InterSystems Case Study
Healthix, the largest public health information exchange in the U.S., connects more than 600 organizations and 6,000 sites and maintains unified records for over 16 million people, sending millions of clinical event alerts annually. In New York State, strict consent laws often prevented clinicians from receiving crucial patient status information—about 6.5 million potential data sends were blocked in the year studied—leaving providers without timely details when patients arrive unable to give consent.
To address this, Healthix used InterSystems HealthShare to implement Essential Alerts after a state policy change allowed limited sharing with clinicians who already have a care relationship with a patient. These real‑time alerts deliver a focused, privacy‑compliant set of information (identity, location, time, chief complaint, initial diagnosis, and a note that full results follow with consent), enabling care managers and providers to act faster, improve coordination, and enhance patient safety across the region.
