A InterSystems Case Study

Disc Computing uses Caché to reengineer its application for e-commerce

Disc Computing, led by managing director Peter Bourne, is an Australia-based VAR that specialized in point-of-sale systems and faced a shifting retail landscape: its Global Retail System still used a character interface and was hard to deploy for close-to-real-time, interactive transactions. To capture the e-commerce opportunity, the company needed to refocus from traditional application development to delivering web-enabled, high-performance transactional systems for retailers.

Disc Computing reengineered its product around InterSystems Caché (Caché Objects and Caché Web) and a Visual Basic front end to create WebPOS, a fully integrated, Internet-based POS, inventory and order-processing solution. Paired with a one-stop service offering (site templates, product imaging, hosting, payment forms and consulting), the new system made global, real-time online retailing practical and easy for customers, enabling small and distributed retailers to sell worldwide and significantly expanding Disc Computing’s market reach.
