Case Study: eGenius achieves rapid, secure, scalable online ticketing for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI with InterSystems Caché (InterSystems)

A InterSystems Case Study

Complex requirements implemented quickly and efficiently

eGenius, a German IT services firm with experience supporting large Christian events, was asked in March 2011 to build an online ticketing and visitor-management system for Pope Benedict XVI’s visit on a very tight schedule. The project required meeting complex stakeholder requirements (event quotas, volunteer management, coordination with bishops and security authorities), strict data-protection rules, and the ability to handle highly variable, high traffic — all with only about four weeks of development time.

eGenius implemented the system using InterSystems Caché (with InterSystems Zen) deployed on Amazon EC2, enabling rapid development by a three-person team and scalable cloud performance. The platform went live in early May, handled peak loads successfully, managed ticket distribution and visitor routing for five major events (300,000+ attendees), delivered timely evaluations that improved turnout (e.g., 90,000 at Etzelsbach vespers), and met security requirements through multi-level authorization, AES encryption, and prompt deletion of all data after the visit.
