Cedars-Sinai uses Ensemble to create a breakthrough “single system environment” for its clinical IT platform

Cedars‑Sinai, a major non‑profit academic medical center in Los Angeles with about 2,000 physicians, faced a sprawling clinical IT environment of 412 applications (including 17 EMRs) and a plan to consolidate to a single Epic EMR. The organization needed to replace its SeeBeyond eGate engine with a more powerful integration platform that could support many standards (not just HL7), connect external providers and devices, transform documents and terminology, centralize data management, and deliver a unified patient view.

Cedars‑Sinai selected InterSystems Ensemble to replace nearly 500 eGate interfaces and enable a seamless Epic deployment. Ensemble’s rapid development and embedded Caché database allowed the migration without disrupting operations, now processing about 6 million HL7 messages per day plus X12 and custom formats. By supporting multiple standards and handling transformation, persistence and aggregation inside a single platform, Ensemble reduced complexity and improved information sharing to support better care and business performance.
