Breakthrough Application Leverages the High Performance and Small Footprint of InterSystems Caché to Help Communities Save Energy

EcoVision, founded in 2005 on the Gold Coast, builds in-home resource‑management systems to help households and communities reduce energy and water use amid rising demand and constrained water supplies. Its touchscreen interface gives occupants real‑time consumption feedback, target-setting and automatic control of devices, and was first deployed in 2006 at The Ecovillage at Currumbin to monitor 144 homes; the company was acquired in 2008 as it expanded into wider residential and commercial contracts.

To deliver this, EcoVision built its platform on InterSystems Caché for its small footprint, high-speed real‑time processing, and flexible object/SQL access and web services, enabling low‑cost touchscreen units, modular UI changes and large-scale data aggregation. The result: robust, low‑support deployments that can manage thousands of meters, enable community-level analytics and demand‑side control (trialed at Lochiel Park), let some residents become net energy exporters, and support integration with smart‑grid and renewable energy initiatives.
