Beaumont Health System improves patient safety using HealthShare strategic interoperability platform

Beaumont Health System, a southeast Michigan network of three major hospitals, clinics and extended care centers with over $2.1 billion in annual revenue, faced a growing IT and clinical challenge: its legacy interface engine was resource‑intensive and unable to produce automated CDC‑formatted CDA/CCD reports required for CMS reimbursement or provide modern monitoring and alerting. Manual data abstraction for hospital‑acquired infections threatened timely reporting and limited the health system’s ability to use clinical data strategically.

Beaumont implemented InterSystems HealthShare as a strategic interoperability platform, rapidly replacing more than 150 interfaces between its Epic EHR and other systems and automating extraction and transformation of infection data into CDA/CCD for CDC/CMS submission—completing the project ahead of schedule. The result was not only compliance and operational efficiency, but improved patient safety and population health insight: Beaumont can benchmark infection rates nationally, better prepare for incoming patients (antibiotics, isolation), integrate device data into the EHR, and shift IT toward more strategic, responsive initiatives.
