Barts and the London NHS Trust Eases Integration of internal Systems and Connection to National EHR with Ensemble

Barts and the London NHS Trust — encompassing St. Bartholomew’s, the Royal London and the London Chest hospitals — is one of the UK’s largest teaching trusts with about 1,000 beds and over 500,000 patients a year. The trust struggled with a maze of point‑to‑point integrations across clinical and administrative systems while planning a new hospital, modernizing care processes, and preparing to connect to the national Care Records Service (CRS).

Barts implemented InterSystems Ensemble as a rapid integration platform to simplify workflows and standardize messaging. Ensemble now receives radiology orders from the physician order entry (POE) system, transforms and forwards them to iSOFT RadCenter, ingests HL7 results and observation reports, and routes/transforms those results back to the POE and to patients’ physicians — reducing integration complexity, speeding adaptation, and positioning the trust to connect smoothly to the national EHR while keeping existing systems.
