Royal Mail faced a major Brexit-related customs data challenge as shipment volumes surged during Covid. Many parcels to Ireland and other European destinations were being returned because they lacked the required data, with 49% of shipments to Ireland failing. Royal Mail turned to its approved delivery management software partner, Intersoft, and the International Export Direct Entry (IEDE) system to help resolve the issue.
Intersoft quickly adapted the IEDE platform by adding a manual entry enhancement so operators could complete missing shipment details such as destination country, address line 1, and total weight. Working in an agile scrum team, Intersoft completed the optimisation in just four weeks and improved the pass rate from 27% to 78% during the test period. Successful shipments to Ireland rose from 20 in July 2021 to 670 in December 2021, and the solution is now being rolled out to more European countries.
