Lexington County School District One - Customer Case Study

Lexington County School District One, a large K-12 district in South Carolina, wanted to expand its personal mobile computing initiative to support 21st century learning with Apple iPad 2 devices for administrators, faculty, and middle and high school students. The challenge was to provide strong wireless coverage across 28 schools and maintain appropriate content access for students both on and off campus. Internetwork Engineering helped design the wireless infrastructure and security approach, using Cisco 5508 wireless controllers, Cisco Aironet 3500 Series access points with CleanAir technology, and Cisco ASA 5585 security platform.

Internetwork Engineering implemented a solution that automatically established a VPN connection whenever a device powered on, routing traffic back to the district’s filtering system, while mobile device management helped detect policy violations. The results were strong: the district rolled out iPads to all 7,000 high school students plus 1,000 staff in 2011–2012, later expanded devices to all middle school teachers, and decided to move toward a 1:1 middle school model as well. Lexington One reported higher student engagement, more collaboration and creativity, and a reliable, affordable, and secure technology environment delivered with help from Internetwork Engineering.
