Welding Alloys Group, a provider of advanced welding consumables and wear protection solutions, needed to improve the cost, performance, and environmental profile of its hardfacing welding consumables. The challenge was to optimize a high-chromium cast iron-based consumable, where wear resistance depends on a complex mix of chemical and mechanical properties, using Intellegens’ Alchemite™ machine learning toolkit.

Intellegens used Alchemite™ to model sparse experimental and historical data, identify the most influential parameters, and suggest new compositions for testing and refinement. The resulting formulation matched existing product performance while reducing alloying elements by up to 50% and lowering price by 10% to 15%, giving Welding Alloys Group a more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly hardfacing material that moved on to industrial-scale trials.
