Smart Technology and Employee Engagement Raise Safety Culture and Reduce Injuries at SUEZ North America

SUEZ North America, a water and wastewater services provider with about 2,900 employees responsible for treating hundreds of millions of gallons daily and more than 1 million annual work hours at heights, struggled with a paper‑and‑spreadsheet approach to incident management across varied client sites. The fragmented system made tracking, analysis and corrective action difficult, undermining efforts to strengthen safety culture, human performance and a risk‑based approach to preventing severe injuries.

In 2015 SUEZ deployed Intelex’s EHS incident reporting platform, equipping workers with smart devices and single sign‑on access, grading incidents by severity, automating notifications and tracking corrective actions. Employee reporting jumped from roughly 400 to 4,000 incidents (a 10x increase), and the company now logs about 4,500–5,000 hazards annually; results include a 24% reduction in DART (2.14 → 1.63), a 41% drop in EMR (1.05 → 0.62), TRIR below the industry average (2.08 vs. 3.00) and employee confidence in safety rising from 57% to 82%.
