Accelerating the Donor Organ Matching Process Through Instant Medical Image Sharing

Gift of Life Michigan, the federally designated organ procurement organization that coordinates nearly 800 transplants a year, faced critical delays because donor medical images were not included in UNet — CDs and VPNs were impractical and surgeons sometimes had to travel to determine organ viability. To close that gap, Gift of Life Michigan implemented Intelerad’s image‑sharing network and web viewer to deliver diagnostic imaging alongside existing donor data.

Using Intelerad, donation coordinators upload donor imaging exams onsite and add a secure imaging URL to UNet so surgeons can review studies on PC, Mac or iPad; this workflow enabled Gift of Life Michigan to share 1,703 organ exams in 2014. The Intelerad solution expanded the reach of imaging access, improved matching capability (including cases where online review enabled a life‑saving match), reduced unnecessary travel, and gave surgeons more time to prepare for procedures.
