Yarra Valley Water worked with Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) and GHD to improve the performance and energy efficiency of an extension to its Melbourne headquarters while targeting a 5 Star Green Star rating. The challenge was to balance daylight, thermal comfort, and low energy use in a 2,000 m², three-storey building with a highly efficient envelope and integrated ventilation design.

Using Integrated Environmental Solutions’ IES Virtual Environment (IESVE), the team modelled and optimised key design options such as glazing size, solar gain, cooling loads, and the potential for natural ventilation. The final solution delivered a sealed, high-performance envelope, TermoDeck hollowcore slabs, and a mixed-mode ventilation strategy, resulting in energy consumption of 80.8 kWh/m²/year and carbon emissions of 58 kg CO2/m²/year—around 61% below Australian best practice.
