XC02 worked with Integrated Environmental Solutions to explore how the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) could help assess compliance with the WELL Building Standard across two indoor environmental performance projects: a UK coffee shop chain and a restaurant. The customer’s challenge was to move beyond conventional whole-space compliance checks and better understand occupant comfort, thermal control, and air quality at a more detailed, individual level.

Integrated Environmental Solutions used IESVE tools including ApacheHVAC, MacroFlo, ApacheSim, and MicroFlo to build more detailed zone models, test ventilation and temperature strategies, and evaluate comfort and air quality conditions. In the coffee shop, this helped identify hotspots and inform changes such as relocating fan coils and sensors; in the restaurant, it supported passive design and ventilation analysis, age-of-air checks, and monitoring of CO, VOCs, dust, and other air quality factors. The result was more actionable design guidance and a clearer path toward WELL-related performance targets, although the case study notes that some WELL air quality criteria remain challenging to quantify fully at design stage.
