Preview of the Walgreens Case Study

Walgreens builds first U.S. net-zero energy retail store generating 220,000 kWh with Integrated Environmental Solutions

Walgreens, a major drugstore chain with thousands of retail locations, sought to dramatically lower its energy consumption and become an industry example. To meet this challenge, they embarked on building the first net-zero energy retail store in the U.S. Integrated Environmental Solutions worked with the commissioning agent, Cyclone Energy Group, which used the IESVE energy modeling software to help validate and inform the design throughout the project.

Integrated Environmental Solutions' software was used as a commissioning tool to study and alter designs to meet the net-zero goal. The solution was a success; the store earned Net-Zero Energy Building Certification and LEED Platinum. It is estimated to use 200,000 kWh of electricity per year while generating 220,000 kWh, achieving net-zero operation. The store continues to be monitored with IES's iSCAN analytics tool to ensure it maintains this performance.
