Trinity College Dublin reduces classroom CO2 peaks by 50% with Integrated Environmental Solutions

Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) worked with Trinity College Dublin on the AMBER research project, which aimed to minimize the performance gap in A-rated buildings and examine indoor air quality. A key challenge identified was dangerously high CO2 levels in school classrooms, which were found to cause fatigue and poor concentration, and later became a critical factor for minimizing the spread of COVID-19 through adequate ventilation.

IES developed and deployed a CO2 monitoring dashboard designed to engage school children. This solution provided real-time, visual feedback in classrooms, prompting occupants to open windows when levels were high. The results showed a more than 50% reduction in CO2 peaks, drastically reducing the time levels were over 1,500ppm from hours to just minutes. The IES dashboard proved highly successful in improving ventilation and was also noted for its educational value.
