Ó Cualann Cohousing Alliance cuts energy use gap from 48 to 111 kWh/m²/yr with Integrated Environmental Solutions

Ó Cualann Cohousing Alliance, a not-for-profit provider of affordable housing in Ireland, faced the challenge of verifying whether its 46 A-rated homes were performing to their high-efficiency design intent in operation. The customer needed to understand the real-world energy consumption and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of the dwellings to ensure they remained affordable and healthy for residents, turning to Integrated Environmental Solutions and its iSCAN data analytics platform for a solution.

Integrated Environmental Solutions implemented a performance verification process using physics-based Digital Twin technology. Wireless IoT sensors were installed to gather data, which was integrated into the iSCAN platform for analysis. The solution revealed the operational energy use was on average 111kWh/m²/yr, more than double the design intent of 48kWh/m²/yr, and identified significant IEQ issues like high CO2 and humidity levels. These insights enabled IES to create a guide for residents to improve their home's performance, helping to reduce energy costs and improve comfort, thereby supporting the customer's core mission of providing truly affordable and sustainable homes.
