MCW Consultants used IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) to review the proposed design for two new government buildings at the Nunavut Research Institute in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The challenge was to improve an already energy-efficient design for a remote Arctic facility while balancing performance, comfort, and practicality.

Using IES software, MCW evaluated design alternatives and recommended upgrades based on payback, occupant comfort, and ease of implementation. The result was a further reduction in annual energy use of 13% and 12%, bringing the buildings to 56% and 52% below the MNECB baseline, and potentially earning 8 and 7 LEED Canada points under Energy & Atmosphere Credit 1.
