Case Study: McMaster University achieves up to 55.3% energy savings with Integrated Environmental Solutions

McMaster University partnered with Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) to support a comprehensive energy audit of 191 Main Street West in Hamilton. The team’s challenge was to identify practical ways to reduce energy costs, improve resident comfort, and lower greenhouse gas emissions, while also developing retrofit plans that could meet the EnerPHit standard and support a 60-year planning horizon.

Using IESVE, Integrated Environmental Solutions helped the McMaster University student team build and calibrate an accurate energy model of the property, simulate energy conservation measures, and compare multiple retrofit packages. The result was seven ECM packages with measurable benefits, including overall energy savings of up to 55.3%, annual utility savings of up to $294,400, natural gas reductions of 61%, electrical consumption reductions of 66%, and payback periods as low as about seven years.
