Limerick City & County Council creates a Positive Energy Block with Integrated Environmental Solutions, cutting demand 23%

Limerick City & County Council, as part of an EU-funded project, aimed to create a sustainable urban ecosystem and establish a Positive Energy Block within its historic Georgian innovation district. To achieve this, the council partnered with Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) and utilized their innovative ICL digital twin technology to model and analyze the area.

Integrated Environmental Solutions implemented a repeatable five-step process using their digital twin technology. This involved creating detailed building models, identifying low-cost operational changes, assessing shallow and deep retrofit measures, and finally integrating local renewable energy sources like PV panels and a tidal turbine. The solution reduced the block's energy demand to 0.6 GWh/yr. With the tidal turbine generating 1 GWh/yr, the block achieved a surplus of 0.4 GWh/yr, successfully becoming a Positive Energy Block and a model for other cities.
