HLM Architects achieves 35% Part L carbon reduction with Integrated Environmental Solutions

HLM Architects faced the challenge of designing a large residential development to meet the stringent London Plan target of a 35% reduction in Part L 2013 Carbon Emissions, without relying on renewable energy or offset payments. To achieve this, they utilized the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) software from vendor Integrated Environmental Solutions as part of an integrated BIM-enabled design process.

The solution involved using IESVE for Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM), seamlessly importing the architectural model from Archicad. This allowed HLM to analyze and integrate passive design, building fabric efficiency, and low-carbon systems effectively. The DSM analysis provided a detailed performance picture, leading to an 80% reduction in space heating energy compared to standard methods and enabling the design to meet its strict carbon targets. Integrated Environmental Solutions' tools were crucial in optimizing resource allocation and verifying the integrated design.
