Dublin City Council cuts whole-life emissions 85% over 60 years with Integrated Environmental Solutions

Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) worked with Dublin City Council, which needed to determine the most effective strategy to reduce the carbon emissions of its ageing social housing stock. The challenge was to assess the whole-life carbon impact, including both operational and embodied carbon, of different renovation options for a vacant social housing block.

Using its digital twin technology and core Virtual Environment (VE) software, IES modelled four retrofit strategies over three time periods. The analysis revealed that a deep retrofit (Strategy 3) was the optimal solution, outperforming even a rebuild by optimizing the balance between operational and embodied carbon. IES's solution demonstrated that over a 60-year period, a deep retrofit could achieve an 85% reduction in cumulative emissions, providing the council with evidence-backed data for its regeneration projects.
