DLR Group used Integrated Environmental Solutions’ IES Virtual Environment tools to evaluate a portfolio of 45 Rockford Public Schools in Illinois. Faced with a major masterplan decision—whether to renovate or build new—the firm needed a better way to assess building performance than energy alone, so it set out to compare schools using a holistic view of energy use and indoor environmental quality.

Integrated Environmental Solutions helped DLR Group build a data-driven performance story using IESVE, combining utility analysis, occupant surveys, and field measurements for thermal comfort, indoor air quality, visual comfort, and acoustical comfort. The results showed that lower energy use did not always mean better learning conditions, enabling DLR Group to clearly communicate findings to parents and school board members and support better-informed capital planning decisions.
