Colorado State University achieves 50.3% energy reduction with Integrated Environmental Solutions

Colorado State University faced the challenge of renovating the atrium of its Engineering II building to create a comfortable, daylit, and naturally ventilated space while maintaining strict temperature controls and minimizing energy use. Integrated Environmental Solutions, through its IESVE software, was used by the consulting firm Ambient Energy to model and test these complex integrated environmental concepts.

The solution involved using IESVE to perform detailed daylight, thermal, and mixed-mode ventilation analysis, which proved the feasibility of using skylights and buoyancy-driven natural ventilation. This allowed the team to verify strategies before construction. Integrated Environmental Solutions' software enabled a design that achieved a 50.3% energy reduction and a natural ventilation rate of 1200-1400 CFM, all while maintaining the required comfort range.
