Cal Poly Pomona reduces EUI to 18 kBtu/ft2/yr with Integrated Environmental Solutions

Cal Poly Pomona (cpp) utilized the IESVE software from Integrated Environmental Solutions to design a new, energy-efficient middle school building that integrated biophilic design principles and aimed to achieve net zero energy targets. The challenge was to create a nature-connected learning environment while significantly reducing the building's energy use intensity.

The solution involved using IESVE for in-depth daylighting and energy simulations to optimize the building's massing, orientation, and natural ventilation. Integrated Environmental Solutions' tools helped implement strategies like mixed-mode ventilation, daylight sensors, and three types of photovoltaic panels. This resulted in a dramatic reduction of the Energy Use Intensity to 18 kBtu/ft²/yr before PV and achieving a net negative EUI of -4 kBtu/ft²/yr after PV, with excess energy stored in a battery.
