3E - Customer Case Study

3E, an energy consultancy in Brussels, needed to evaluate the performance of a new hybrid demand controlled mechanical extract ventilation (DCMEV) system with an integrated air-to-water heat pump for an atypical apartment in Belgium. To do this, they used Integrated Environmental Solutions’ IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) software to compare the system against more traditional HVAC options, including a standard DCMEV setup and an MVHR system with a gas boiler.

Using dynamic simulations in IESVE, Integrated Environmental Solutions helped 3E assess heat pump performance under two occupancy scenarios and validate results against a real-life test case. The hybrid E+ system delivered up to a 31% reduction in annual primary energy demand versus traditional DCMEV and a 16–23% reduction versus MVHR, while also increasing seasonal COP by 0.4 for space heating and 0.3 for domestic hot water through the use of mixed air as the heat source.
