Using Technology to Expand Access to Top Quality Tutoring

Bonas MacFarlane, a UK provider of private tuition and university admissions coaching, launched a one-year pilot to expand access to its top-quality tutoring for 100% scholarship sixth-form students worldwide. To scale from bespoke one-to-one tuition to a cohort-based programme while keeping costs manageable and offering a rich, mobile-first learning experience, they needed a virtual learning environment (VLE); they selected Instructure’s Canvas for the project.

Instructure implemented Canvas as the central VLE, providing easy course customization, a robust mobile app, lecture recording hosting and tools for peer collaboration. The Canvas solution drove strong engagement and retention: 100% participation on assignments and tutorials, 76% live-class attendance, 80% of students logging in daily, and collaboration enjoyment rising from 44% to 60%—helping Bonas MacFarlane retain students and scale its offering.
