Using Canvas as the Foundation for Student-Centred Learning

The University of Hull, serving more than 19,000 staff and students, needed a pedagogy‑led, student‑centred learning platform to improve flexibility, engagement and TEF-related metrics such as student satisfaction and retention. After re-evaluating their legacy LMS in 2014, they selected Canvas from Instructure because it met their needs for an intuitive, flexible system and allowed a rapid, institution‑wide transition.

Instructure implemented Canvas across the university, migrating all legacy content and providing close support through weekly Customer Success calls to ensure a smooth rollout by September 2016. Within six months Hull had created 3,500 live course modules and program sites, staff were quickly using Canvas for tasks like uploading handbooks and giving digital feedback, and the platform established the foundation for improved student‑centred learning, satisfaction and retention.
