University of Birmingham - Customer Case Study

The University of Birmingham turned to Instructure’s Canvas to replace its phased‑out VLE after a review in 2013. Facing intense competition and the need to support blended learning, the university required a reliable, cross‑browser system that easily incorporated multimedia and worked on mobile phones and tablets for its roughly 27,500 students.

Instructure implemented a cloud‑hosted Canvas VLE with a modern, intuitive interface, customised and configured in five days; adoption was rapid—4,600 courses were rolled out in three months and within six months more than one‑third of students used Canvas on mobile or tablet. The switch delivered measurable results: 99.9% uptime, fewer basic support calls, increased staff and student collaboration, and more courses available than the previous platform.
