The University of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest and top‑100 university, needed to replace its 15‑year‑old homegrown LMS CECIL with a more flexible, integratable and mobile‑friendly platform. After testing options in 2014–15, the University selected Instructure’s Canvas to support device‑agnostic access and easier integration of external content and tools for its 42,000 students and thousands of staff.

Instructure delivered a rapid, institution‑wide Canvas rollout (completed by March 2016) that enabled more than 5,000 staff to seamlessly integrate apps like Google Drive, Piazza, Talis and Turnitin, and to deliver 3,000+ courses to 42,000+ students; Canvas Data plus custom LTI work (e.g., grade transfer to PeopleSoft) added analytics and workflow automation. The Instructure implementation produced strong student and staff uptake, improved teaching practice support, and clear scale and interoperability gains.
