A Instructure Case Study
UC Davis faced a significant challenge with the high cost of textbooks, which created inequitable access to educational resources for its students. A survey found that 78% of students were choosing not to acquire at least one required textbook due to cost, with first-generation students being particularly affected. To address this, UC Davis partnered with vendor Instructure and its Canvas learning management system to build a new solution.
The solution was the Equitable Access program, a flat-rate subscription service created with Instructure's Canvas and VitalSource. For $199 per quarter, all undergraduate students gained digital access to their required textbooks directly within Canvas on the first day of class. This program, integrated seamlessly by Instructure, made acquiring materials easier for 70% of students and made 68% feel more free to choose classes without worrying about textbook costs. The university is now on track to lower the subscription price over time.
