Leveraging the cloud for anywhere, anytime learning

City University of Hong Kong adopted a cloud‑first strategy to enable student‑centred, mobile learning and replace its on‑premises Blackboard LMS. To achieve this, the university selected Canvas from Instructure in 2015 to support anywhere‑anytime access for its roughly 30,000 users and to improve collaboration and device flexibility for students and staff.

Instructure delivered a cloud‑hosted Canvas platform that rapidly scaled across the campus: more than 80% of CityU courses are now on Canvas, two‑thirds of instructors use flipped‑classroom approaches, and one‑third of logins come from smartphone/tablet apps. Measurable impacts include a jump in lecture recordings per semester from 442 to 3,760 and high satisfaction (88% of staff, two‑thirds of students), with CityU now planning MOOCs on the Canvas platform.
