Knox County Schools boosts student engagement with Instructure Canvas for 5,000+ teachers

Knox County Schools, a district serving over 57,000 students, launched a district-funded grant program called the School Technology Challenge. This initiative was created to use technology for personalized learning after a Race to the Top grant proposal was not funded. The challenge was to find a learning management system (LMS) that could act as the foundational "glue" for this new 1:1 program across its schools.

The solution was implemented by the vendor Instructure using its product, Canvas LMS. The district chose Canvas for its ease-of-use, LTI integrations, and its suitability for K-12 education. Instructure provided onsite training for a team of teachers who then rolled it out to their schools. After the first year, teachers reported a significant increase in student engagement and participation. The assessment tools and SpeedGrader made grading more efficient and feedback more intuitive, leading to new levels of student success. The implementation expanded from 650 teachers to over 5,000, making Canvas an indispensable part of the district's future plans.
