Floyd County Public Schools connects 97% of homes with Canvas by Instructure

Floyd County Public Schools, a rural Virginia school district, needed to maintain its strong community connections and ensure educational continuity when transitioning to fully remote learning in 2020. Their challenge was to find a robust solution that could support this shift and prepare students for future success, moving beyond their previous use of basic digital tools like Google Classroom.

The school adopted the Canvas LMS platform from vendor Instructure, implemented in partnership with Virtual Virginia. This solution provided a centralized hub for learning, enabling students to stay connected and access coursework from anywhere. A key result was the successful integration of the Amazon Future Engineer program, which uses an embedded code editor in Canvas to allow students to code directly in their browsers and receive real-time feedback. The partnership with Instructure via Canvas transformed a necessity into a deeply adopted tool that fosters digital literacy and provides students with opportunities previously unavailable in their rural location.
