Exercise Research Australia, a boutique registered training organisation (RTO) in Melbourne, needed a solution to boost student engagement, support a blended/flipped classroom model, streamline assessment reporting to the Victorian regulator (VRQA), and encourage staff adoption of e-learning. After evaluating several systems, the organisation chose Instructure’s Canvas in 2015 for its usability, mobile app, outcomes-linked Gradebook, open-source benefits, and ongoing community and vendor support.

Instructure’s Canvas was implemented to deliver interactive courses, immediate feedback on practical assessments, and efficient backend assessment reporting to meet government requirements. As a result, Exercise Research Australia saw measurable improvements: Department of Education quality indicators rose to 83.7% for “perception of teaching” and 86.4% for “perception of the assessment process” (vs VIC averages of 68.3% and 69.5%), student satisfaction with access/navigation reached about 85–86%, instructors saved hours per course through authentic feedback, and the platform delivered high reliability (99.9% uptime), supporting greater engagement and course completion.
