Driving Cohesion by Putting Canvas at the Heart of Digital Learning

Salford City College, one of the largest colleges in the North West with a combined student and academic population of about 12,000 across six sites, faced a fragmented digital-learning environment: multiple inconsistent systems, uneven staff adoption and student retention challenges. To embed digital innovation across all levels and provide a single, reliable VLE, the college selected Canvas from Instructure.

Instructure implemented Canvas as the college’s central VLE, delivering a cloud-based, user-friendly platform that reduced maintenance overheads and supported blended learning. The rollout produced measurable gains: around three-quarters of staff earned a Canvas level-one badge, students showed increased flexible engagement (with hundreds of page views in the early hours), and staff could more easily share resources and support learners — improving access, engagement and the consistency of digital teaching across Salford City College.
